Essay no. 4 - Barry Ford Solo Marimba and Percussion Trio

2nd Place of the 2003 PAS Competition. This dynamic and aggressive work is scored in one continuous movement (fast, slow, fast). Similar in some regards to Marimba Spiritual, the piece has many more metric shifts and a fascinating slower section giving the players room to create a nice rounded soundscape. 9 minutes

Dave Gerhart has done a great job taking one of the 20th century's premier string quartet and adapted it for 4 marimbas. Using different playing techniques and with a complete translation of all French terms, this arrangement will enhance the musicality of the ensemble players and be well received by the audience. Score and parts both include a 4.3 and 5.0 octave version of marimba four for flexibility of instrumentation.

Blue Rondo A La Turk - D. Brubeck - arr. Bissell 4 Marimbas, Vibes, Bells, Timpani, St. Bass, Drumset.
-Del Mar College (rehearsal) - Univ. of Nebraska at Omaha (rehearsal)

Using the original Brubeck recording as the prime source, this arrangement captures much of the spice and swing lacking in other arrangements. Even the classic 2nd chorus of the Brubeck's piano solo and the intro and outro Paul Desmond saxophone fills have been preserved. The four marimba parts may be played independently as well.
